The project Brick Play is a participatory process in the city of Kortrijk, with the construction of a tile vault as its intent. Map13 Barcelona organised and directed several workshops where citizens were able to discuss the neighbourhood, the city, the form and location of the vault and their wishes and needs. The workshops also taught design students traditional design methods and architecture, and taught engineering students approaches to construction through a hands-on building experience. A workshop for children was also organised. The children drew their visions of different aspects of the city on cardboard panels, which were used to build a special children’s vault. MAP13 uses traditional building techniques and calls on the expertise of masonry apprentices and other professionals, enabling an interesting experience in the transfer of knowledge.
